Early in the season adults will feed on honeydew, carrion, and dung. As flowers become more available they will choose to nectar from flowers.
Viceroys can be found in moist and shrubby habitats such as fields, lake edges, wet meadows and roadside ditches.
Females lay two or three eggs per plant, on the tip of a leaf. Caterpillars feed mostly at night.
This butterfly can be found from May-September.
This wing patterns of this species is an example of Mullerian mimicry with the Monarch.
